I want it to be perfect to encourage sharing of thoughts from the public.

had great participation tonight. a highlight for me was towards the end when I was just wathcing by myself and the content in the bubbles was changing on it's own. The number and instructions were out there and people kept sending. It was great.

photos came out well, need to post them, but the lighting is perfect, they look fake, it's brilliant.

senator john mccain

txtual healing
...is our commencement speaker... bob kerry sent out an email defending mccain as a choice for speaker. I was originally not too concerned with Maccain being the speaker and I was eagre to hear what he had to say. however kerry telling us to listen to what this man has to say, mccain does not embody my values, has made me reconsider my passivity to the him as our speaker. Will he speak the truth or is he pandering to our the liberal community and simply tell us what we want to hear. I have a feelign that I will be extremely dissapointed. These scandals and crimes are much to complicated for the media to report on. This world described as black and white, or us against them, or whith us or against us. The problem we face are defined as apparent or not. As designers it's our job to start to translate these very large and complex systems, no matter how dry the material may seem at the beginning in it's rawest form and turn it into something meaningful for people to look at and understand easily. Not deleivered by some guy and gal with perfectly styled hair sitting behind a new desk. WHo are these people. It's up to us to 'as john lennon says... 'why don't we do it in the streets.' of course you can interpret that in other ways. The technology is available to be delivering our messages in public, or enable others to deliver their's. Had dinner with my sister, niece and mom. It was nice, it was fun even. I then ran back to the apartment and set up the speech bubbles cause I wanted to show my mom the set up and what it was like to see the bubbles live in the public where they should be seen and participated with.

the kids from the Gowanus Projects or 'GP' were swarming around the set up. It was reall amazing. I was surrounded by 12 year olds that wanted to interact with the bubbles. They asked me to post some messages, so I did. I don't remember off what they were. Then those kids dissapeared into the night. Kelly, tommy, jason, sheila came by. Duncan and Faye. They all watched it with my sis, niece and momma.

Then they all made there way off to the evening and where they had to go and be and eat and sleep, and sit, and listen, and read, and drink, and talk, and love with people.

More kids came by, a couple of GP's teens out feeling out the night. 3 boys. They asked what was happening I told them how it worked, they seemed into it. The one kid was working out the text messaging on his phone, he had trouble with the prepending of the number and the colon on the message.

but he got it in there and he gave himself a shout out. Posted his name 'Tah'. Then I walked back to my truck. The kids were crossing the street and a black hunday SUV pulled up, one of the kids wacked the car. The car stopped and a fired up white guy got out of the car. shaved head. A shouting match ensued. The guy screamed at the kids asking which ine punched the car. The one fellow who had been stand offish before, was screaming back at him that no one had hit the car. The guy wanted to kick some serious ass. He was going to stick it to this kid.

The kid said to wait a second and he was gonna go fetch some others to fight this guy. the guy shouted that the kid couldn't fight his own fight. I'd say this guy fomr the car was 30 something. He shouted at the woman in the driver seat to shut the hell up. This guy was unhealthy. The rest of that night ain't gonna be much fun for those two.

The GP kid stood his ground, he was gonna get some boys, he shouted back at the guy saying that he was a grown man, tounting him with the fact that he was out of the car ready to beat up a a teen black kid.

A large guy from the GP's came over and stood between the white guy and the kid. The shouting continued. two of the three boys hung out on the street corner. The shouting continued. The white guy finally ahd his fill, and went back tot he car after the shouting match. They pulled off, it got calm again. The boys came back over, they texted some more, about girlfriends and who they liked. Once one message is successfully sent, the ideas start coming. I learned some of there names, from the postings. then some other boys came over a little younger, they kept putting dirogatory remarks about eachother into the bubbles. I snapped pictrues the whoel time I hope they come out. These kids were all over it. I showed them how the system worked. how the cell phone takes in the message and how it is posted.

They were into it. some adults came by. But for the most part did not pay attention. never looked up, they just moved through. some really young kids came by and i posted a message for the one kid who loves playing with his wrestling toys... so I posted 'where are my wrestling toys' for him. he went off and found an older man, Terry. Terry came back over with the 2 young kids. We talked I showed him how it worked. He said I could make a lot of money. I agreed. hmmm. I told him I didn't want to go commercial. I didn't talk about how to make money. That part scares me, I really don't know what I'm doing when it comes to making the money.

Anyhow, I explained how commercials make us want what we don't need. He agreed, it was a good little talk. He went off with the young kids. Probably time for bed, hopefully that's where they were going.

I really enjoyed mixing with the neighborhood kids. I hope they spread the word. I hope someone is asking. I think they felt empowerd, like when the how the same kdis reacted to the piece when I put it up on Smith and Douglass. I think it's such an empowering experiecne to put names and information up so big in lights. I let them continue. I told them that it was boring to put curse words up and to make fun of eachother. But they did. They fought a lot... I don't remember hitting eachother so much as a kid. A lot of energy in these kids, and really excited to learn.

A reaction I thought was really interesting was when people asked how much I was being paid to put on this projection, and I had to answer that this wasn't a commerciala nd was an art piece. I think the men from the projects couldn't believe it wasn't paid for or sponsored. I saw the deli owner and his wife... they seemed to like what was happening and we chatted for a few minutes. it was fun.

I ran out the battery in my truck. That sucked. well still gotta jump it now. ugh.

oh, the cops swung by once, they asked about the shouting fight in the street. I told them that everyone walked away. They said'they walked away?' I said yes, they walked away. and the cruiser lurked back down the street. I wondered about whether are being watched.

kids song

txtual healing
I remember singing this in Sunday school, we never sang the parts with jesus in it... instead we substituted it with 'voice'. but I like the relevance to of the song content to txtual healing.

This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.

Smith St.

txtual healing

I uploaded the results I hailed a cab, raced off to radio shack on court street. Telling the cabbie to wait, I ran to the find the door bolted I pleaded through the glass to be let in. I wish I had a video of me arriving at the door and finding it locked. buying the vga cable I was back in business.

Set the truck up. had to keep the engine running (i didn't like doing that) hopefully for other shows I will have access to electricity, but when doing this type of work in public, being unknown and without a permit, the truck is what I have for power. Ivee pumped the gas. I used the ac/dc converter to power the projector directly from the truck battery. kept the phone and computer on there own batteries. I plugged the computer in eventually. using a lower wattage lighter plug.

The show went smoothly. A few miss formatted messages never made it up, but I believe the system tended to work successfully. kell did a great job of helping people use the phones and format correctly.

The crowd was good... it fluctuated, but people were into it, according to feedback I received and heard about. one guy mentioned that the lighting was bright. It's a trade off in location vs. foot traffic. The lighting on the corner was a bit brighter than I had anticipated. But all seemed to be fine, It was a good debut to the public.

I used 2 bubblesfor the first time. hence the slight difficulty with people understanding the instructions. it was fun to see the final results from the photos i took, since it was hard to catch all the posts while running around talking to people and snapping photos.

It appeared that people enjoyed hanging around to watch what would go up next. And many felt it was cool just to watch and not participate. I enjoyed watching kids use the system, they read form the flyer and posted their messages. When they saw there message go up you could see how excited they were. I wondered if it had anything to do with having an equal voice or equal input to the show. A sense of empowerment from posting a message that didn't say this came from a kid. I got excited because I would probably go to school the next day and tell people about what I saw.

all in all it was really great to see it all in action. I had fun
9/11

Does anyone else have the feeling, all over agian, that 9/11 happened yesterday? Our TV news coverage, newspaper coverage, and the entertainment industry. Our televisions are making us relive the imagery from that day... blow for blow. As if to feel that horror again, as if to justify any means necessary to protect us from the evil terrorists. Our movie industry has a list of movies that are now coming out about 9/11, flight United 93 getting the most play of all these ground zero centric films to watch. The one flight that never reached it's target is being used to reach it's target in the hearts and minds of U.S. citizens. Re acquianting us with the brave horroics performed by the passengers all while reacquianting us with how there was no choice, no discussion, no understanding, no serious investigation, no other way, but to take revenge by any means possible... The arrogance spoke. The bully in the school yard freaked out and now the state of the world is worse.

Moussaoui is fesh on the pages of our newspapers... here's the indictment from the U.S. government. Imagine getting that in the mail.

As we approach the 5th anniversary, all the visuals are fresh int he air, as if it happened yesterday. Everyday is 9/11 or at least that desire to fight back kicking and screaming without knowing what and why it happened?

Too much time has gone by, we're beginning to ask questions of why we're in Iraq. So bring us back to the more innocent times when we were unaware of spider holes, drones, iraqi press ministers, embedded reporters... So let's live it all again and refuse to ask the questions again and not cover what we need to cover again. The facade created by our media. Get the voice form within the facade or even the facade only says what a facade wants to. The piece challenges the audience to move past the facade of conversation and lack of depth in thinking by our current popular media rhetoric.when we can start to slip inside those windows and doorways and hear the real conversations going on inside. Can others speak for us? Do we have our own stories to tell? Can this create dialogue?

When will we move beyond the facade of these structures that create the grid we follow everyday? Through conversation? through interpretation of what's happening on the inside? The intellectual is under attack because of the facade. Are our face to face meetings and discussions suffering? How are our conenctions in cyberspace effecting what we expect from our meetings in physical space? Lower or higher expectations? Lower expectations because we have found solice in the web and the kind of 'personal' connections that we can make. If you felt like a misfit before you can now 'connect' with others that share your interests. Perhaps this is what was considered an internet addiction in the past, when it may have just been a medium that fascillitated the social connecting of self perceived 'misfits'.

When we date, relate, and share online, what is happening to our public spaces? Do we begin to leave them up for grabs? Are we looking to the internet and cyberspace for our working definitions of love, money, social behavior, entertainment? This is not to say that the internet is a bad thing and is destorying out society... but to question how much of a role it is playing in de-socializing us from our physical connections.<div FORMAL: The opposite of projector bombing. An invitation sent out to encourage people to come to a planned projection on a building. Audience stands in streets placing text into multiple speech bubbles through text messaging. The speech bubbles are placed next to the windows of the building. The performance and content is driven by the audience and passersby. As a planned performance the rules of the performance could be stated before hand and posted at the event, perhapos int he form of flyers or postcards. Here the rules could be explained, thus reducing the visual clutter of having to make the rules/instructions part of the projection. Though there is an audience passersby are allowed and encouraged to participate.

A formal event would require more planning and notice for set up. It would require scouting a location or finding a fixed location that I would have to clear in advance to set up a projection that had the right coverage and location

2. INFORMAL: This is a spontaneous projection event. It relies on the public int he street to play with the speech bubble/bubbles. It could be as infromal as proejcting from a car, as long as the projection was legible. Or it could be shown froma predetermined location... like from a window that looks out onto a good surface to project onto... a good surface meaning, multiple windows, but with enough space between the windows to fit in the bubbles. This approach would require a mobile system for projecting... a car, batteries.

Considerations: foot traffic, low light, clear instructions, call to action, clear display (in focus, easy to read, bright enough to see).

Additional coverage: besides participating at the location I'd liek to set up a video feed that posts to the web, or is displayed elsewhere so that others may effect the system and play with the content of the bubbles. This adds a whole other dyanmic to the system.

Uranus

txtual healing
you are the guy floating back and forth int he middle... those are donuts falling out of the sky... you eat the donuts and get points... the guy below you walks backa nd forth he also eats donuts.... but when he eats donuts her grows taller, when he grows tall enough he eats you... Occasionally the light in the window would go on or off and it added to some of the fun. Kelly helped out by putting messages up int he bubble. I thnk that I will go with putting a video feed into a gallery so that gallery goers could text the speech bubble, when people passing through the streets don't even bother. We are so tuned out. a camera will be on the projection that can be set up in various locations. It's an interesting look at what we consider art and stop to look at in the street or what we only respect in a gallery or somekind of position of importance.

Did white and black projections, filled the speech bubbles in with white, and then did a speech bubble with just a border of white. I liked both, but I guess the outline with white text is better.

People in the street noticed it, but nobody bit and sent a message. I guess people don't neccessarily trust what they see in public. hmmmm? No actually only a few people were around. But they did all notice and appeared interested.

further thoughts... an entire wall covered in speech bubbles, people just keep filling them in and they proejcted on a gigantic wall. The speak out wall. interesting. The wall we come to to speak out about our dissapointment and hurt. A big wall that has speech bubbles being populated with peoples text messages. The piece somes from society not being able to talk out their problems. Like therapy, like txtual healing.

busted up cheerleader

txtual healingwhat's goingon with this cheerleader that took a digger and then, strapped down on the gurney, she just keeps on cheering... It's really something when a cheerleader makes top billing and there are so many stories out there that need to be spilt, or explained, but they are so incredibly dirty and complex nodoy has the patience anymore to sit through the explanation. An artist with over 70 public projections. His projections are usually shown on major public buildings with politically charged content. His interest in how design, performance, and media interact to encourage dialogue for social change are interesting to me and what I've been looking at in terms of my thesis.

"Only physical, public projection of the myth on the physical body of the myth (projection of myth on myth) can successfully demythify the myth. The look, the appearance, the costume, the mask of the building is the most valuable and expensive investment. In the power discourse of the "public" domain, the architectural form is the most secret and protected property. Public Projection involves questioning both the function and the ownership of this property" (1983).
<img width='1' height='1' Give dates time. etc.

I need to scout locations, I should talk to Evan. I need passersby. Different neighborhoods and ethnic backgrounds... what kind of symbols mean what in different parts of the city. what kind of meaning do certain photos have for people. If they get to put words int he mouths of the people in the images.

projectors, equipment (have most of it and it all works)...

I hope this is interesting. I'm convinced that people would stop and use it... the people in the gallery were into using it... they would watch and then type, and then watch. People could do it from remote locations too... have a image of what will be projected online... along with screening times...

I need content for the images. Commercial signs and billboards, political, religious, pop culture? no sure yet, need to look around and feel this out. start hunting images and scenarios to put bubbles into. Poeple would figure out how it worked... they did at the gallery. I was happy about that. I owe Scott Paterson a big thanks for taking some time out to chat about the piece that was going to go in fellissimo. Ever wonder if people are pushing you towards seomthing and they know what it is, but won't tell you? But you get the answer yourself. And that's what they ahd intended.

remote grafitti

txtual healing
ok, hate to be using the notion of grafitti here, (evan roth), but capturing that feeling of remote grafitti or posting or triggering without being present at the event or happening. things that come to mind or timers, vcr's and recording devices, but in terms of a trigger and not a timer bombs are the only things I can think of that act on a push button turn key, dial phone number, send txt message.

I guess there's radio controlled from afar, and the capabilites of telepresence through the internet and cell phones.

the process

txtual healing

I just keep running it through my head... how this or that would work, at what point does it work? completely? I've got to pick a route here.

couple questions:
1. Where does time and space fit into all this? Speed and Politics. This was something I was workinginto my first paper, but I wasn't sure if it was right, because nobody latched onto it, but I think people are beginning to see some of the connection between mobile computing made available for the people and the ability to control our movements, but without our knowing it. Of course virilio's speed and politics was written in regards to the speed of gaining control of the masses through symbol and the notion of freedom. Kind of curious to see the story of 'V' is for vendetta.

2. What's the performance? when does it begin? when does it end? never? it's the eternal text collector. gather items up, pop culture references and keep them stored and timelined.

3. Do I build another form of text messaging performance from the all automated 'simple text', mixing in a human element, human free form improv with the computer taking in text messages.

I made a little abstract music video today. watching the footage of lights at night from my cell phone camera and mixing it with some free form lose acoutsic guitar noodling made a nice little video. All shoton the cell phone, but conscious of capturing street and car lights on a ride home from williamsburg. Some of the other nice rides were uptown in a bus. walk to subway and on subway as well as the little vid of me following people ont he way to school.

It would be nice to have silhouettes of people walking projected on a screen, while one actor is walking along with them... is this part of the crowd or not part of the crowd? where does this guy exist? and what's he looking for? what's he want the crowd to do? put up messages based on questions he asks? get people to answer from both sides of topics and not just the side they believe is right. i find it a bit interesting to have people sit down and have to answer with an arguement used by the other side. hm.

I need to keep making. projecting and thinking about ongoing remote presence, or remote control, or remote behavior... the ability to drop bombs and the ability to be holed up in the white house protected from terrorists, questions, telling the truth, anyoen that might disagree with you.

I mentioned earlier today that maybe I do believe in god afterall, since bush's presidency we've nearly lost a whole city due to natural disaster. This christian can't tame nature. I'm wondering what god sends next, california falling into the sea from an earthquake. or mt st. helens again. Bush has got to get his shit together, cause I think god's angry with him. And I'm sure with Cheney too.
bio/interest

When I started my grad degree I came to an MFA program because of the concern for where our society was headed, we were at war in Iraq and in a general war on terror, the current administration seemed to always be hiding somethign, or was always on the defensive. From their mannerisms to language, they seemed paranoid that the public was going to figure out the complete control they were beginning to take on the public. As long as our gov't kept pointing out our freedoms, they culd slowly take them away or create an environment for conservative thinking and filtering of liberal ideas, or even creative ones for that matter. Using the cut out 'Last Supper' that I received helpful direction on from Scott Paterson. It appeared to me that people understood how the system works... some pople posted banal comments and shouts out to other people in the gallery, others used it to play with the the last supper content of the piece. It appeared to be playful and fun for people. And it was exciting think about who was sending in whata nd form where. One woman on her cell phone called her friend in Brooklyn and told them to post and they did. The Friend in Brooklyn felt it was fun to send a text with the notion that it behaved like graffiti.

The solution worked out, it was th ebest way to go... once I was up workingin the space and they met me I think the story began to change and they were more open to a representation. It pays just to be nice. And I also was able to keep the image removal note on the piece, hence messing around with people a little bit and what it means for them to look ata piece and know what it is without the original image.

I need to write more about my thoughts on censorship especially in regards to future pieces and how I might be faced with these situations again. I thik charm and kindness works wonders.

That Was Yesterday's Menu, bitch...

The World is a Scary Place... no it's not. That's Yesterday's Menu. It's what we're living under, we need to celebrate each moment. We need to celebrate with eachother and make friends so our friends can make those friends. It's time to start to meet our neighbors. Having looked at networked communication for the past 10 years of my life I feel it so important to keep up our contacts and connections through the digital media we all use. But we need to get to know the people around us, because they are going to pull you through.
The artist that created the artist is the artist.

a made up cell phone artist. He creates art through cell the phone... basically a collection of the pieces I have worked on... the 13 pages of short messages, the answers to all those questions, the cell phones as tools, the self portrait of eyes, mouth, ear, thumb taken on a cell camera. short video of softcore porn. A glimpse of the artist that the commentators look closely at a yellow circle, circles his head poking into the screen. the text at the bottom reads 'The artist?.' as if this piece of footage has been studied by say news media on a hunt. Take that little poke of head and put it in art form, on t-shirts, postcards, etc.

I'll post all the questions from the Spring semester.
The text message as instrument to make music.

The warping of cellphone rings, or the most popular one.

people can add themselves to the thank you list being projected onto a wall...

'I'd like to tremendously thank the following people for helping me:'

My amazing Mom, Dad, Britte...

the description:

mobile communication or communication mobile.

The cell phone is the communication mobile. like the automobile. moving us through cyberspace all the time.
The content on these screens gets in the way of the advertisers messages posted everywhere.

using the presupplied cell phone stuff like images, text templates, movies, etc... use that to supply visuals if needed... worden tressle ply wood with giant plaques for the short message collection. Then a table to view the cellphones over the years. a tv is showing the softporn that was made with the cellphone vid camera, self portrait, cellphone videos of cellphone ringing and 'mom' is calling. The cellphone getting stacked up with text messages and just looping. When have you ever watched messages pyle up on your cellphone. you let mom ring and ring forever, til she hangs up and doesn't leave a message. perhaps there a re projectors very close to the wall showing the shakespeare piece and the last supper very small.

Then the performance, the viewers can text on the spot with either an automated system that sends responses in the form of sms, mms, and voice. imagine the voice could be a man and a woman, actors that play the part of the artist, but maybe that's the art? They call and if they get the same sex they play as it's a good friend kind of conversation, and if it's an opposite sex connection then it's more flirtatious to whatever point. If it's a kid you play mommy and daddy.

If the user puts in a request for an sms then get a typical sms message... but with the artists signature on it... like a piece of art. same with photos...the signatrue will consist of some sort of text style type and symbol or name.

Maybe there's a lost interview, and it's recorded so you can't hear him speak at all, but instead their are text subtitles telling what he's saying.

The cell phones would have the art pieces in them... a frowning face for the death of my dad, a text message that says: brn eyes nose lips mouth blnd hair chin etc. with the title of 'self portrait.

perhaps some of the original art could be in the form of items left in the city for a user to go get or see. A user would send a message to get a piece from the artist and then they would might get a piece immediately or perhaps days later... (reference the artists in a box) piece.

state of the union

I found Bush's reading of the marine sargeants final letter to his family very touching, but the true meaning of the letter was revealed shortly after the reading when congress stood and applauded the marine's family that was in attendance. Bush stood theresmilign and winking at his buddies in the audience. It was dispicable, it showed his complete detachment to what he had just said. The family on camera appeared sad, not happy, thought hey were guests it was hardly a reason to celebrate and you could see the honesty and loss on their faces not so on Bush's face. type='text'>me as everyone on tv...

so I was thinking on how to set up the predetermined action and drive it with text messaging, and I think I want to move into using video clips showing the action... A text messages would edit together different pieces and segments of video on the fly... along the lines of the borroughs cut up technique.

In terms of content and authorship I was thinking it would all be original footage, but I would play the main character in every piece (along with other actors where needed)... a collection of videos would be shot and the subject for the videos would be based on different genre's of television... news, drama, medical drama, cop show, animated, etc.

I hit a wall because I really don't want to create an improv piece that is held captive to the timing of texting and action on stage. So using video and non-linear editing techniques in Max I could create a real-time interactive dynamic video installation.

I'd also like to think of incorporating live cameras into the piece, thus I could put the user into the piece, or train cameras on still images that also display text messages (like the speech bubble pieces)... These could be located elsewhere in the gallery or a place more remote. perhaps the stills would act as commercials when mixed in with the videos.

the text message that triggers the piece would be used within the piece to add to the meaning. This parts a little foggy.

anyhow... I don't want the potential of an improv clunker that is hit or miss because of response times etc.

I'm working on my production schedule, so let me know if you see something in this, or if you have questions... I think there's still a lot of questioning and pieces that need to fit, but feel this direction is making sense.

the idea

My thesis will be all about dynamic video editing and camera triggering along with sound to create a dynamic narrative from a text message...

dynamic video performance

multiple sources of media comeing in throught he television, some canned video some are filmed stills and video with text input form the audience.

video content... episodes of me in different television shows... shirt off imitation of biggest loser... a weather man in the hurricane... anchor man... soft porn grinding... a sitcom... a serious drama... a private eye... war coverage... soldiering/combat... the still images are stills of real photos, a picture says a thousand words...speech bubbles on the stills... projected or cut out and framed, or dangling.

a text message is sent to a number and that triggers what is seen on a central television... the TV has instructions for sending a message into the system... each letter or word will set off a dynamic serious of edits from different segments of video pieces to the live cameras fixed on the still images with user text on it.

Your text message will be used someway to show on the screen.

fuck it's a lot of work. I went to video because the buffer for the text message to arrive that comments on the subject being viewed is too long and to slow, the action as I would like it would not be fast or responsive enough. The main action of the piece would take place for approximately 15-20 minutes, but after that the audience may still interact with the piece, but it morphs into more of an installation.

Two actors will start off facing separate panels of a 3 panel wall. A projector is aimed at the wall and in the middle panel are the instructions for the audience to send text messages to a phone number. The messages are then projected in a rhythmic fashion onto the walls that the actors are facing going back and forth between the actors. The audience sends in text messages and the actors each read aloud the text messages as they are diplayed in front of them. After about 5 minutes of reading the messages aloud the actors will turn towards eachother and look at eachother. The give eachother recognizing looks.

At the same time the text messages keep displaying, but nobody is reading them. The scene becomes very quiet. The actors give eachother a warm acknowledging smile. They then go back to reading the text messages. A few minutes later another actor comes out dressed in a delivery man’s jumpsuit and wheels out a television on a tv stand. He has one of the readers sign his clip board, then they flip on the television.

The live feed on the television shows a person playing a news reporter or talking head. The text messages being projected on the wall fade out and the person on the television starts reading out the messages that are coming in. The delivery man goes off and comes back with a couch. The two actors that were reading sit downi n the couch and proceed to watch the television. The audience is now watching the actors watch television. The audience is still able to send text messages in and have the person on the television read them. This scene continues for the rest of the night.

An adaptation of the ending would be that the television is wheeled out and the actors that were on stage leave and the audience is left with just the television reading the text messages.

Dating site

participants create profiles, not unlike current sites, but the pprofiles are little hompeages, not unlike friendster. The service would provide the user or aprticipant with 'business cards' they could then hand out say in a chance meeting or a situation that may otherwise wind up on craigslist's missed conenctions.

The scenario:
May be someone on a subway, 'making eyes' or perhaps you just see someone beautiful and you approach them and with very little small talk you hand them a card. The card has your website on it and the whole thing is clearly a pick up. You promptly can leave the situation and wait for any feedback. Otherwise there's not much lost.

This takes the dating websites toa new level of physical connection, you get a chance to physically see your suitor, or interst and can then take it form there... you read their profile and decide to give it a whirl or not.

Yes, the draw back is that you have to physically approach someone, but it is not small talk it's simply a 'Hi, I thnk you're cute as hell and would liek to set something up without putting oyuon the spot right now' the person receiving the card can promptly toss it, save it, and respond however they choose. But it moves beyond the pick up line, or the crappy weird small talk can I get your number kinda of discussion.

It's not a business card which leads one to a concolusion about what you do or give no more info than the physical meeting.

A user would open a profile on the dating service not unlike match.com and then they would receive cards with the url for your profile and then they can distribute at will. This would work in bars, in subways, in the streets, giving you a possible better chance to make a simple but great first impression, and an even better second impression.

DON'T FUCKING STEAL THIS IDEA OR I"LL SUE YOU!

Playing Dead

Has anyone actually played dead... is that too much to ever try. A cross street with a blinking red and yello light. I never really went into Victor much. The ranch I lived on was between Victor and the pass so I'd never really needed to go in. There was a gas station and a quickie mart I used on occasion. I wonder what the guy working the counter thought when he saw me. He'd probably known every person that went into that store during the day. Of course they had the daily traffic in the winter going up to Targhee for skiing. So I'm sure he'd get some tourists swinging in, but whoever worked there never knew me from anybody else, at least that's what I could imagine.

The drive up and downt he pass was a winding switchback. When driving toward Idaho the mountain would rise up on the right of the road and on the left it fell down the steeps. There was always a little snow up at the top. 10,000 ft. The climb was approximitely 4,000 ft. Most people lived at just under 6,000 ft.

I'd have time to think on the ride up. think of song lyrics and never write them down. Most of the time I'd think about my frustrations with working and what I was doing. I never knew what I was doing. That was the problem. In a way that's how I have always felt. The road up through the pass was a path I could follow it was guidance I needed, time to think. It was a routine. It allowed my mind to rest some. I was gided through the mountain 30-40 minutes each day. 30 if I floored it and felt good about not skidding off the edge.

The weather always took your mind off problems and stress. When storms moved in they were real. You had to pay attention to what was going on. Many time the ride over the pass was just in blizzard conditions. I'd throw the tacoma into 4 wheel drive formt he get go and just press up through the pass. seeing my headlights framing the falling snow. It was hypnotizing. I'd flip through radio stations and see what was playing, if it was contry or jam bands it was pretty tolerable. I'd have my cd player in the car. In large snowstorms you'd just drive and not ahv a clue about what was playing. The snow outside dampened the noise inside, the hum of the truck in your mind the wiper blades scraping back and forth, you hoped the snow wouldn't pile up to much to clog the wipers. Are there good wipers out there?

short roof film fest amongst friends

This summer we should have a rooftop short film fest at my place... friends and acquaintances put together teams to make a 3 min film, but over a longer period of time, everyone can submit whatever they like, it just has to be under 3 mins and we show them on the roof.

performance piece

couple talks into a wall with text messaging being sent to it... they stop look at eachother and acknowledge eachother (like when new yorkers occasionally do when it's late night on a dark street and two people pass eachother). Then they go back to reading the texting coming to the wall from the audience inputting it. Then a tv rolls out with a woman or man reading right into the screen (teleprompter) the couple reading stop and then sit down into a couch that's been rolled out and then a lamp a coffee table and perhaps a bookshelve roll out to create the model room and the tv woman still reading the text messages. The whoel thing is done live.

The abbreviated text messaging represents the abbreviated information we are receiveing through television, a pictrue says a thousand words, how fast does it take you to read a thousand words and comprehend it. This is the model to follow if you want comfort around the television.

The Battle of Algiers

a must see during this war on iraq episode of history, it ain't original and there's precedent for failure. blanks. Liek the quesitons that if it's as bad as everyone says it is, why aren't we doing anything? Or what's being done to stop it vs. hide it and then watch it get introduced it into our culture. Like Clinton and Lewinski... those were th eogod old days (i know it's been said before). I mean are there people that fulfill their fantasies? Who's in the casual encounters, I want to bring those people to life with video of people walking down the street and around town... a sign of the times coming together, the way we are all wondering about the next guy. The internet has introduced us to hundreds of new characters in our life. The internet is like that secret invisible buddy you didn't want to let go of as a child. Of course child molesters could play on that one. hmmm can't say I was molested as a child. If only when I was younger could I look on the internet and see what the future holds... These abbreviated form of communication. Is the written word our religion? Is it? We pray to it... it's what we read, it was the shapes and the meanings of the symbols that when put together we'd worship. We'd worship into war and into conquest. The audience which would ocnsist of passers by would send a text message to me and I would deflect it to the wall. Of course I will be given a trigger to let me know when the message is about to be displayed and thus can give a karate deflection and send the message off to the left or right. This could be built in MAX, having max take in the message and then trigger some kind of sign for only the actor knows (a light flash, a vibration, ?) and wihtin 2 seconds the actor knows the message will be displayed, thus able to choreograph a karate kick fending off the text message. I will need to build a buffer for the messages and then go through a list. It woul dbe greta to set them up to shoot out at random times so that if there are a lot of messages it doesn't appear to just be on a regular interval.

The idea would be I can see the messages coming and block them form hitting me.

tangible reality

in this media sensationalized world we are searching more and more for tangible ideas thoughts and events. The intagible and ambiguous war on terror, like the cold war, is created by the 2 sides that battle with tangible images and words on our TV's and in our press. The war on terror was never defined from the outset it is simply created as we move along. Yes fear is what keeps us locked into the notion of invented reality since we hide aways from all the "dangers" lurking. we are high atop in our small tower seperated from our own actions and from the actions that are being made against us and what they really mean or really look like.

quote

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be... kurt vonnegut

Destroy all humans!
Eat a Joe's
Like a Virgin
My baby does the hanky panky
Surf's up, baby!
Get out.
You have no idea.
I'm stoked.
Pray for Waves
Fuck yeah I'm in.
Gimme some of that / dat.
yeah Baby
Bush sucks!
Que sera sera
Dude, where's my ...
Put your hands in the air and give me all your money
Wherever you go, there you are.
Take my hand
is this all there is?
can i help?
no more
pour quois?
funny how money changes situations
clap your hands
make some noise
explain yourself
what is it dear?
see no evil
i'll try to be nicer if you try to be smarter.
Jan 2 new Yorker... spoke of a swarthmore journalism group 'War News Radio' that picked up an Iraqi phone book and strted calling numbers in it for interviews. They've spoken with some 25 iraqis... they interview them thus breaking through the filters of Media sources like TIME, CNN, FOX etc. What if a projection was scheduled that allowed Iraqis to text message to a phone number here and the message would be displayed... what would they say in 160 chracters or less to the American Public? How could I set this up? Perhaps it could go both ways..? americans could send messages to iraqis, this would probably not be the best thing. There could also be a web component, people could text from the web as well as from their phone. All the messages could be archived online... they'd ahve to be in english, or would there be a translater??

The whole system could be screwed with since the system is open... i wonder if that could be filtered and redirected dependingo nt he number it comes from?? it could be displayed on it's own as a way of pointing out people messing with the system...

Test

Not so great tonight... the flow of the theater pieces is up and down, like a wave... the pieces can't be long. It's all too improv at the moment... It needs to be seeded with more scripted action and movement... it's hard to do this without a live audience... since the audience need to respond to what they are watching, but texting is a little time consuming and takes attention away from the action. Things could work if there was action then comment comes in from audience texting... ugh, am I losing interest. The whole piece may become a lot shorter and simpler than I originally thought.

LAME

Ever feel lame and disgusted with yourself...

I juts spent the past 2 days sleeping all afternoon. I have things I need to take care of yet I just selpt all afternoon. It makes me depressed. I feel as though I used to be a much more interesting and engaged person than who I am now. It's like I have no attention span or desire to do anything. I don't know why. I used to be active, interested, motivated. I don't feel that now, I feel stress and anxiety to be all those things. I'm not old and yet I feel like I'm retired. this doesn't make me happy and more than anything it makes me feel depressed. I don't know what I'm doing in ever sense of the word. It's incredibly frustrating. I feel dumb and unable to learn or focus on anything.
