Counts Media

initial test of the 'last supper' piece in the window of Counts media office on 38th and 8th ave... The group was having an office outing, so I set this up to give them a taste of the how it works... it wen tover well, we need to now discuss the logistics of putting the piece up for a longer period... garner some press hopefully. I need to work with the piecce to fit it into the dimensions of the dimensions of the window. I need to develop a web presence so remote users get play with it and contribute.

New ways to define my project

txtual healing
Video documentation, edited, capture the dialogue created in the speech bubbles. compare neighborhoods, locations, populations.

What kind of stories can be told through a location based project? Documenting all the dialogue that is created? How is this interesting? Need to do a lot of performances.

Architecture and the structures I'm using as setting and context.

What kind of stories or narrative is created by the structure I make the stage or setting.

Diller and Scofidio

Klar hooked me up with the architecture team... "Facsimile" by artists Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, consists of a 15' by 25' LED video screen upon which video images from a variety of sources are featured. Artist Elizabeth Diller was born in Lodz, Poland and Ricardo Scofidio was born in New York City, New York.

project involves the facade of a building, with live video form a feed displayed on front.

1. FORMAL: The opposite of projector bombing. An invitation sent out to encourage people to come to a planned projection on a building. Audience stands in streets placing text into multiple speech bubbles through text messaging. The speech bubbles are placed next to the windows of the building. The performance and content is driven by the audience and passersby. As a planned performance the rules of the performance could be stated before hand and posted at the event, perhapos int he form of flyers or postcards. Here the rules could be explained, thus reducing the visual clutter of having to make the rules/instructions part of the projection. Though there is an audience passersby are allowed and encouraged to participate.

A formal event would require more planning and notice for set up. It would require scouting a location or finding a fixed location that I would have to clear in advance to set up a projection that had the right coverage and location

2. INFORMAL: This is a spontaneous projection event. It relies on the public int he street to play with the speech bubble/bubbles. It could be as infromal as proejcting from a car, as long as the projection was legible. Or it could be shown froma predetermined location... like from a window that looks out onto a good surface to project onto... a good surface meaning, multiple windows, but with enough space between the windows to fit in the bubbles. This approach would require a mobile system for projecting... a car, batteries.

Considerations: foot traffic, low light, clear instructions, call to action, clear display (in focus, easy to read, bright enough to see).

Additional coverage: besides participating at the location I'd liek to set up a video feed that posts to the web, or is displayed elsewhere so that others may effect the system and play with the content of the bubbles. This adds a whole other dyanmic to the system.

Uranus

txtual healing
you are the guy floating back and forth int he middle... those are donuts falling out of the sky... you eat the donuts and get points... the guy below you walks backa nd forth he also eats donuts.... but when he eats donuts her grows taller, when he grows tall enough he eats you... But you can poop out a little bomb and hit him with it, dropping him back down... The title is Uranus, I'm so happy about that.

a guy that can't get in touch with his ture nature, wants to talk smart, but it feels so ridiculously phoney he has to speak in such simple immature language. He tries but ends up not being able to take any of it seriously. He tries along the way, with little things... Like when he posts "smart" things on his IM name, but then reverts to something more raunchy and silly.

Idea #ahJkf5000577

txtual healing
City wide projections happening simultaneously. People take a city wide trip to see the projections... perhaps it represents the original seven wonders of the world. 7 large scale projections, like monuments, but they move and they are able to be interacted with. The urban landscape as the gallery, new york city as the known civilized world.

projecting on neighbors

Set up the 3500 lumens proejctor in my window and shot it across the street to put a speech bubble up near one of the windows. Occasionally the light in the window would go on or off and it added to some of the fun. Kelly helped out by putting messages up int he bubble. I thnk that I will go with putting a video feed into a gallery so that gallery goers could text the speech bubble, when people passing through the streets don't even bother. We are so tuned out. a camera will be on the projection that can be set up in various locations. It's an interesting look at what we consider art and stop to look at in the street or what we only respect in a gallery or somekind of position of importance.

Did white and black projections, filled the speech bubbles in with white, and then did a speech bubble with just a border of white. I liked both, but I guess the outline with white text is better.

People in the street noticed it, but nobody bit and sent a message. I guess people don't neccessarily trust what they see in public. hmmmm? No actually only a few people were around. But they did all notice and appeared interested.

further thoughts... an entire wall covered in speech bubbles, people just keep filling them in and they proejcted on a gigantic wall. The speak out wall. interesting. The wall we come to to speak out about our dissapointment and hurt. A big wall that has speech bubbles being populated with peoples text messages. The piece somes from society not being able to talk out their problems. Like therapy, like txtual healing.

busted up cheerleader

txtual healingwhat's goingon with this cheerleader that took a digger and then, strapped down on the gurney, she just keeps on cheering... Where are the stories about the soldiers that keep on fighting, and so nobody here pays attention. It's really something when a cheerleader makes top billing and there are so many stories out there that need to be spilt, or explained, but they are so incredibly dirty and complex nodoy has the patience anymore to sit through the explanation. The architecture in media was meant to build cheap meaning into the news so that it outshines the complex stories.

if they could talk...

txtual healing

Project speech bubbles onto buildings, line the speech bubbles up to the windows. the public can send meesages up to the speech bubbles, speaking for the inhabitants of the building.

I've been researching Krzysztof Wodiczko. An artist with over 70 public projections. His projections are usually shown on major public buildings with politically charged content. His interest in how design, performance, and media interact to encourage dialogue for social change are interesting to me and what I've been looking at in terms of my thesis.

"Only physical, public projection of the myth on the physical body of the myth (projection of myth on myth) can successfully demythify the myth. The look, the appearance, the costume, the mask of the building is the most valuable and expensive investment. In the power discourse of the "public" domain, the architectural form is the most secret and protected property. Public Projection involves questioning both the function and the ownership of this property" (1983).
